ITWORD, 17 points

How to play ItWord

Every day there's a new six-letter ItWord. Your job is to chain together six words built from its letters, scoring more points the less common your words are.

The basics

The goal

Enter six valid words with given start and end letters, which are derived from iterating through today's ItWord. Be a top ranking player by entering more uncommon words, making fewer mistakes and completing the game in a faster time.

Scoring

Once a valid word is entered the colour of its letter tiles will indicate how uncommon the word is.

Tile colour key, from a revealed word (hollow, no points) to the highest scoring guess
Fewer points More points

The rarest words earn a star

A star appears if the word entered is one of the rarest words of all. Not every round has one.

Invalid and slow guesses cost points, so balance finding the least common words with accuracy and speed.

Stuck? You get one reveal per game, which fills in a valid word for that round but scores no points. (Requires a free account)

An example game

Say the ItWord were PLANET. Each round's word starts and ends on neighbouring letters of it, and gets one letter longer, until the last round wraps back around to the first letter.

  1. Round 1: 3 letters, from P to L

    PAL, 13 points
  2. Round 2: 4 letters, from L to A

    LAVA, 9 points
  3. Round 3: 5 letters, from A to N

    APRON, 9 points
  4. Round 4: 6 letters, from N to E

    NATURE, 5 points
  5. Round 5: 7 letters, from E to T

    ELEMENT, 5 points
  6. Round 6: 8 letters, from T to P

    TEARDROP, 13 points

Any valid word that fits will do, but the rarer it is, the more points it scores.

How the rounds work

  • There are six rounds, one for each letter of the ItWord.
  • Each round's word must start on one letter of the ItWord and end on the next. The first and last letters are filled in for you.
  • Words get one letter longer each round: three letters in round one, up to eight in round six.
  • The final round wraps around, ending on the ItWord's first letter.
  • A round is complete as soon as you enter a valid word. If a word isn't recognised, try another.

Points in detail

  • Every valid word that fits a round is ranked by how often it's used. The rarest words score 17 points, and more common words score less, down to as few as 1.
  • The rarest words of all also earn a star, though not every round has one.
  • Each guess that isn't a recognised word costs 1 point, up to 3 points per round.
  • Each round's clock starts when the previous one ends, and you lose 1 point for every full minutes a round takes, up to 5 points per round.
  • If you're stuck, you can use your one reveal per game to fill in a valid word for the round. A revealed word scores no points, and the round's time penalty still applies. (Requires a free account)
  • Your final score is the total of your words' points less any penalties, from 0 to 100.

Streaks

  • Your streak is how many days in a row you've finished the daily ItWord.
  • The flame next to the help icon at the top of the page shows your current streak. You'll find it on your profile too.
  • The flame stays grey until you've finished today's game. Not having played yet doesn't break your streak, so you have until the next ItWord to keep it going.
  • Finished a game before signing up? Create your account the same day and it counts as the first day of your streak.
  • The longer your streak, the deeper the flame's colour, until it turns gold.
  1. Streak of 1–6 days
  2. Streak of 7–20 days
  3. Streak of 21–29 days
  4. Streak of 30+ days

Leaderboards and accounts

  • Anyone can play, with or without an account.
  • With a free account your games appear on the daily leaderboard, and your profile tracks your stats, streak, best words and game history.
  • Players are ranked by score, then by fewest incorrect guesses, then by fastest time.
  • Today's leaderboard unlocks once you've finished today's game, so it never spoils the answer. Past days' leaderboards are open to everyone.
  • When you finish, you can share your result. It includes your score, time and incorrect guesses, but never your words.

Tips for a higher score

  • Think beyond the first word that comes to mind. Unusual and specialist words often score far more.
  • Make sure a word is real before you enter it, as every miss costs a point.
  • Keep an eye on the clock. A good word now can be worth more than a perfect one in six minutes' time.
  • Plurals and other word forms count too, which can open up extra options.

Frequently asked questions

What is ItWord?

ItWord is a free daily word game. Each day there's a new 6-letter ItWord to play, where you chain together 6 words from its letters, scoring more points the less common your word choices are.

Is ItWord like Wordle?

A little. Like Wordle there's one new puzzle a day and everyone plays the same one. But rather than guessing a single hidden word, you fill in 6 words of growing length from given start and end letters, and the rarer your words, the higher you score. It rewards a broad vocabulary more than a lucky guess.

How do the rounds work?

For each round you will need to enter a valid word to progress to the next. All rounds have a specified word length: 3 letters in the first, growing by one each round to 8 letters in the final round. You are given start and end letters, which will be neighbouring letters of the ItWord, starting with its first and second letters, with the final round completing a loop through the ItWord by starting with its last letter and ending with its first.

Can I see an example?

Of course, let's assume we're given the ItWord PLANET. Here is a list of words which could be entered for each round in order: PAL, LAVA, APRON, NATURE, ELEMENT, TEARDROP.

How is my score worked out?

Every valid word you enter falls into one of five rarity bands: Very Common, Common, Uncommon, Rare, Very Rare. The highest possible score a word can achieve is 17 points, however, as not all bands will contain a valid word for every round, this score will be awarded to words from the rarest band available, ensuring you're always rewarded for finding the rarest words possible. Scoring then increments down by band, with 1 point being the lowest score given for a valid word. This will only be awarded when all bands contain a valid word for the round being played but your word is from the Very Common band. Penalties can apply. See below for more details.

What costs me points?

You'll lose 1 point for each invalid word you enter, which includes spelling mistakes, with this capped at 3 points lost per round. You will also have time penalties applied if you take longer than 3 minutes to complete a round, which will be 1 point for every full minute thereafter, up to a maximum of 5 per round. Your total score potential runs from 0 to 100.

Is a perfect score possible?

Yes, every day. The trick is not to enter the first word that comes to mind, but don't take too long or enter too many invalid guesses as they can be costly!

How is the rarity of a word decided?

The bands indicate how often a word is used in everyday English, which is based on a large mix of books, subtitles, websites and social media. Each band is roughly ten times rarer than the one below it, and once validated the tile colour indicates which band you achieved. The colour scale is shown in the game. If the text of the word changes to white, this lets you know it's from the rarest available band earning you maximum points. If your word also earns a gold star then it landed in the Very Rare band and you can give yourself a little pat on the back.

Do I need an account to play?

No, anyone can play. A free account adds your results to the daily leaderboard so you can see how you compare to other registered players. It also gives you a profile detailing your stats, including your current streak, total games played, best and average score, best and favourite words plus your game history and top ten games.

Can I install ItWord as an app?

Yes, with no app store needed. Choose Install app from the menu, or on an iPhone or iPad, tap your browser's Share button and then Add to Home Screen.

When does a new ItWord come out?

A new ItWord goes live every day at midnight UK time. When the day is over, the ItWord, its answers and leaderboard are added to the archive, which will be available for you to browse.

Can I see past ItWord games?

Yes, all past games are stored in the archive. You'll be able to see every past day's ItWord, its definition and leaderboard, along with the top scoring players and most played words from each round.
